What is the Serological Testing Method?

Serological testing involves identifying the presence of antibodies in a person’s system, which is consistent with prior or current exposure to Covid-19. It is widely believed that this testing method helps determine how susceptible a person is to be infected with Covid-19 in the future. According to the guideline, antibodies become detectable after a period of 1-3 weeks. Testing for SARS-Cov-2 is playing an important role in analyzing the virus’s epidemiology and further identifying groups that can be at potential risk for infection.  

Serologic tests detect SARS-COV-2 in an indirect way. Although it can’t replace the primary testing method for Covid-19 diagnosis, it can be an important application when it comes to stopping COVID-19 pandemic. This test does not specifically test the immunity of a person, but the previously infected history of the patient with SARs-COV-2.

When a person is infected with COVID-19, antibodies can easily be detected in the first week. The amount of IgM and IgG that appears in the serum within 2-3 weeks of the illness can easily determine a person’s exposure to Covid-19.  

Types of Antibody Testing

  • The Binding Antibody Detection

The test is conducted while using the purified proteins of the virus SARS-COV-2. IgM is the antibody that is produced once a patient is exposed to the infection. The IgM test can easily be done in less than 30 minutes depending on the complexity of the test. There are two categories that fall into the binding antibody category, point of care and ELISA. 

  • Neutralizing Antibody Detection

Although the FDA has not authorized the use of this testing for SARS-COV-2, the neutralization test can determine the responding nature of the antibodies that have been developed to prevent further infection. This type of testing includes incubating the plasma or serum. There are two types of neutralization tests that are being conducted, virus neutralization tests and pseudovirus neutralization tests.
